Applying for a mortgage loan is one of the more troublesome parts of buying a home. But it doesn't have to be. I've got great connections to many mortgage lenders in the Lafayette area, and they've helped me realize a few things that can make the process of applying for a loan very easy.

1 – Compile a list of questions about your loan program

Be sure to have a list of questions if you do not totally understand the pros and cons of all the various loan programs. It is often hard to know the distinctions between both fixed and adjustable rate mortgages. I or one of my lenders will be able to help you understand the advantages and disadvantages of each.

2 – Determine when you want to lock

When you lock in the interest rate, it means that the mortgage lender holds to the mortgage interest rates for the loan – most often at the time the loan application is sent in. By floating the rate, you can lock the rate at any time between the day of your loan application and issuance of closing documents. 3 – Decide if you want to pay additional points to lower your rate

4 – Gather your paperwork
